Be it company name or a new product. It is one of the most important steps for any successful business. The name you choose has a huge impact on the impression the business or product provides. It is worth spending time and effort to get it right. You don’t want to change your business name later down the road, after investing lots of time, money and effort to build your brand.  

 Here are things to consider:

  1. Find a name that will convey a story or meaning about the product or business.
  2. Make it attention grabbing, but still easy and simple to remember.    
  3. Try not to complicate it with funny spelling, or unnecessarily long names.   Remember when choosing a business name:

  4. Think about the future: how will your name sound in 10 or 20 years from now?  Will your business or product name be able to adapt to growth in the future?
  5. Watch out that there is not another company or product with a similar name. You want your business to stand apart from others.

  7. Finally, test your name, make sure it:
    • Sounds good over the phone (for example, when a sales rep calls a prospect).
    • Won’t be constantly mispronounced or misspelt, which defeats the purpose of a name.
    • Isn’t confusing.
    • Conveys what you need it to convey. 
    • Isn’t offensive (to other cultures).
    • Has a URL (web address) that works with it.

Choosing a brand name is exciting and fun. Be creative.  Make the most of the brainstorming sessions, and soon, you will have a good brand name that will be on everyone’s lips.
